What We Believe

Horizon Christian Fellowship Harrisonburg has been formed as a fellowship of believers in the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Our supreme desire is to know Christ and be conformed into His image by the power of the Holy Spirit. We believe that the only true basis of Christian fellowship is His (Agape) love, which is greater than any differences we possess and without which we have no right to claim ourselves Christians.

We await the pre-tribulation rapture of the Church and we believe in the literal, personal, and visible Second Coming of Christ with His saints to rule on the earth. This motivates us to holy living, heartfelt worship, committed service, diligent study of God’s Word, regular fellowship, Holy Communion, and participation in adult baptism by immersion.

We Believe:

GOD is the only true and living God, eternally existing in three persons: The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, equal in power and glory; and that this Triune God created all, upholds all, and governs all. (Deuteronomy 6:4; John 1:1, 14; Acts 5:3-4).

JESUS CHRIST is the foundation and cornerstone of the church. He came to restore man’s broken relationship with God and His finished work on the cross makes that possible. Because of His love demonstrated on the cross, we now have reason to fellowship with one another and proclaim salvation through His life, death, and resurrection. (Revelation 22:13, Matthew 1:23, Matthew 11:2-5, I Peter 2:24, I Corinthians 15:3-5, Acts 1:9-11, Matthew 24:29-31).

THE HOLY SPIRIT proceeds forth from the Father and Son to convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment and to regenerate, sanctify, and empower in ministry all who believe in Christ. We believe the Holy Spirit indwells every believer in Jesus Christ and that He is an abiding Helper, Teacher, and Guide. We believe that Jesus Christ baptizes the seeking believer with the Holy Spirit and power for service.  We believe this happens at the time of, or subsequent to, regeneration and is a separate work from the indwelling Spirit for salvation. We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit and in the exercise of all biblical gifts of the Spirit as reflected through the fruit of that same Spirit.  (Acts 1:8, John 14:16-17, 1 Corinthians 12:4-7, 1 Corinthians 3:16)

THE BIBLE containing all the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments is the Word of God, fully inspired and without error in the original manuscripts, and that it is the infallible rule of faith and practice. Therefore we place great emphasis upon teaching it in public, studying it in private, and using it as a guide for our daily lives. (II Timothy 3:16; I Peter 1:21).

WORSHIP is expressing praise, reverence, and love to a worthy God.  We take special time to worship Him in song during church services. It is also our goal to worship Him wholeheartedly while at home, at work, and at play.  (John 4:23, Hebrews 13:15)

CHRISTIAN GROWTH – Our supreme desire is to know Christ and to be conformed into His image, likeness, and example by the power of the Holy Spirit. We encourage this by abiding in Jesus Christ through His Word, prayer, fellowship, and by yielding our lives to the Holy Spirit.   (Philippians 3:7-16, 1 Peter 2:2, Romans 8:29)

LOVE is the greatest virtue and demonstration of the reality of Jesus Christ. We endeavor to show a Christ-like love toward all men. Love should be exhibited in our lives by our words as well as our actions.  (1 Corinthians 13, John 13:35, 1 John 3:14, 1 John 4:20)

CHRISTIAN SERVICE is a part of the Christian life and is the responsibility of all believers. Our goal is to develop the ministry of every member to the benefit of all. (Titus 2:14, Ephesians 2:10, 1 Corinthians 15:58, Ephesians 4:11-16)
